The Text and Data Analytics Working Group received funding in 2017 to organise an expert workshop on “Distant Reading in Literary Texts”. The aim of this initiative was to bring together experts to discuss issues of literary text analysis and promote the Working Group as a framework for international exchange and collaboration among established experts in the field.
The workshop, which was organised in collaboration with the DARIAH-DE Cluster “Quantitative Text Analysis”, was held on 23-24 November 2017 at the Department of Literary Computing at the University of Würzburg. It brought together a number of international experts on computational analysis of literary text to present their latest research projects and discuss current developments of computational methodology in public.
Speakers at the workshop were:
Fotis Jannidis, University of Würzburg
Karina van Dalen-Oskam, University of Amsterdam
Tomoji Tabata, University of Osaka (travel expenses were covered by other funds)
Maciej Eder, Pedagogical University of Krakow
Jan Rybicki, Pedagogical University of Krakow
Christof Schöch, University of Trier
Thomas Weitin, University of Darmstadt
Presentations covered a wide spectrum of topics currently discussed in literary text analysis, including stylometry, distributional semantics and deep learning. The workshop provided an opportunity to learn about the latest developments and discussions within the research field to a public audience while at the same time providing a high-profile discussion forum to the invited experts. It, therefore, helped to establish the Text and Data Analytics Working Group within the expert community as a networking hub and increased the visibility of DARIAH within the wider public.
This post is part of the Working Groups Stories series presenting results and outcomes from the Working Group Funding Scheme 2017-2018.
