Join DARIAH
Participation in DARIAH is possible at several levels. At the level of DARIAH ERIC, the main participants are countries and intergovernmental organisations, represented by their relevant ministries or research councils. They can participate as Members or, if they are still in the process of preparing themselves to join, as Observers.
Research institutions can also participate in DARIAH. If their country is already a DARIAH Member, they can join the national consortium and become Partner Institutions. Institutions based in non-member countries can participate as Cooperating Partners, subject to the applicable arrangements with DARIAH ERIC.
Finally, DARIAH is open to individual researchers who have an interest in collaborating with or contributing to the infrastructure but who are not part of a DARIAH national consortium or institution.
What are the benefits of joining DARIAH?
Becoming a member of DARIAH provides concrete benefits for Member Countries, research institutions, and individual researchers. By connecting national and European resources, expertise, infrastructure, and funding opportunities, DARIAH helps strengthen research in the Arts and Humanities at local, national, and European levels.
Benefits for Member Countries
Being part of DARIAH enables countries to:
Maximise research investment – Share the costs and expertise required to develop research infrastructure, making national investments in Arts and Humanities research more effective.
Advance digital technologies and infrastructure – Access, develop, and share digital resources, tools, and services across national borders, while benefiting from DARIAH’s expertise and guidance on digital infrastructure.
Strengthen and coordinate national research infrastructure – Develop a coordinated national approach to Digital Arts and Humanities infrastructure that responds to researchers’ needs and connects national resources with European initiatives.
Leverage funding opportunities – Gain access to funding opportunities, European and national calls, strategic networks, and expertise that can support project development and planning. Members also benefit from DARIAH’s broad community of contributors and its engagement with European research policy.
Help shape the future of research – Access new research methods, technologies, and approaches to emerging legal and ethical challenges related to the digital transformation of the humanities.
Support teaching and training – Provide researchers with access to a wide range of training resources, programmes, and opportunities to develop their digital skills and expertise.
Strengthen national research strategies and visibility – Increase the visibility of national research activities and institutions by presenting their achievements and developments through European and international networks.
Join a European research network – Exchange knowledge, expertise, and best practices with researchers and institutions across Europe and build connections with established European research networks.
Benefits for Research Institutions and Individual Researchers
Joining DARIAH can:
Increase visibility – Raise the profile of institutional and individual research in the Arts and Humanities, particularly in the field of Digital Humanities, at the European level.
Enable international collaboration – Create opportunities to collaborate with researchers and institutions across Europe through knowledge, skills, expertise, and training exchanges.
Support the sustainability of research outputs – Help ensure that digital research projects, methods, tools, and services remain accessible and usable by the research community over the long term.
Support Open Science and Open Access – Provide guidance on the evolving research policy landscape, including Open Science and domain-specific Open Access practices, standards, and training.
How can you join DARIAH?
There are several ways to participate in DARIAH ERIC, depending on the level of commitment and the status of the country or institution.
1. Member Countries
EU Member States, associated countries, third countries, and intergovernmental organisations can join DARIAH as Members, represented by their relevant ministries or research councils.
Members:
Have access to all DARIAH ERIC tools, services, and activities.
Have access to DARIAH funding schemes.
Can help shape DARIAH’s strategy and budget as voting members of the General Assembly and the National Coordinator Committee (NCC).
Can be elected in the Joint Research Committee (JRC) and chair a Working Group.
2. Observers
Countries that are interested in joining DARIAH but are not yet ready to become Members can participate as Observers.
Observers:
Have access to DARIAH ERIC tools, services, and activities.
Have access to DARIAH funding schemes.
Are invited to attend the National Coordinator Committee (NCC) and General Assembly, but do not have voting rights.
Observer status can provide a pathway towards full DARIAH Membership.
3. Cooperating Partners
Public or private institutions with a public mission, located in countries that are not yet DARIAH Members, can participate as Cooperating Partners.
The rights and obligations of each Cooperating Partner are defined in a binding agreement with DARIAH ERIC. The agreement is normally valid for three years and can be renewed. Further information is available in the Documents and Policies section.
4. Non-Member Collaboration
DARIAH is also open to institutions and individual researchers who wish to collaborate with or contribute to the DARIAH community.
For example, researchers and institutions can:
Participate in DARIAH Working Groups.
Attend DARIAH events (e.g. DARIAH Annual Event, Friday Frontiers webinars).
Take part in DARIAH training and other professional development opportunities.
Contribute their expertise, resources, tools, or research activities to the DARIAH infrastructure.
Membership fees
Membership fees apply to Member Countries and Observers and are calculated based on each country’s GDP.
Observer status can provide a pathway towards full DARIAH Membership, allowing countries and institutions to become involved in the DARIAH community before taking the next step towards full participation.
For more information, see the list of Members and Partners and learn more about the composition of DARIAH’s national consortia.
