The DARIAH-EU Annual Event 2025 took place in Göttingen, Germany, from June 17th-20th 2025. The topic of this year’s event was The Past. Hosted at Göttingen State and University Library (SUB Göttingen), this event brought together 270 researchers, academics, archaeologists and more from the DARIAH community and beyond in a vibrant and lively setting to network and exchange.
This year’s theme sought to explore the past as a thematic area encompassing a wide range of topics in the Digital Humanities, ranging from the study of ancient cultures to contemporary history. Indeed, the study of the past is greatly enriched by new technologies and methods, which have profoundly changed the ways that we do research today, from primary research (digitised collections), analysis (OCR, HTR, etc), transmission and communication (blogs, online meetings, conferences & classes), and beyond.
The call for contributions sought paper, panel and poster submissions that would leverage Digital Humanities approaches to analyse, interpret, and present historical and archaeological data. Whether through digital methods, workflows, archives, computational analysis, interactive media, or other digital means, the Programme Committee was seeking to highlight innovative approaches to studying the past. A record number of diverse and engaging submissions resulted in a packed schedule of papers, panels, poster and demo presentations over the Annual Event’s days in Göttingen.

The 2025 event kicked off with meetings of DARIAH bodies and several pre-conference workshops, followed by three conference days with panels, papers, keynote speeches, poster and demo sessions. Specifically, the programme of the event consisted of:
Several different Working Group meetings, such as of the newly founded Library WG, and an evening WG Showcase highlighting current projects and outputs from the various WGs.
An internal Collaborative Research Scenarios ECHOES workshop organised on the first day of the event aiming to collect input toward shaping ECHOES around user needs.
An opening keynote lecture by Gabo Arora (world renowned multi-award winning immersive artist, professor at John Hopkins University, entrepreneur and former UN diplomat) entitled “A Bicycle of The Heart”. In his keynote, Arora explored the impact of immersive technologies to drive social impact through case studies and a framework for action.
A DARIAH Germany Showcase, discussing the sustainability of research infrastructures especially in regards to the past and future of DARIAH-DE.
Papers and panels on various topics pertaining to the study of the past, such as Digital Storytelling, Interdisciplinary Approaches, Oral History, Reconstructed Histories and more.
Poster and demo sessions, featuring a diverse showcase of different projects and initiatives across the wider DARIAH Community, including multi-sensory elements. This year, demos were allocated specific slots for public demonstrations.
A showcase of DARIAH WG funded projects from 2023-2025, featuring presentations on the activities and results achieved.
A concluding Board of Directors panel, chaired by Edward J. Gray, discussing how DARIAH and other Research Infrastructures are part of the story of European Construction.
A special feature of this year’s event was the organisation of the Text+ Community Plenary Event next to the DARIAH Annual Event by the NFDI Text+ consortium. Taking place on June 16 and 17, 2025 in Göttingen under the motto “Connecting Infrastructures – Connections between European Research Infrastructures”, this event was the prelude to the DARIAH Annual Event offering a unique platform for exchange between European scientists and relevant stakeholders.
