In a general context where GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) and research data become open and FAIR, an increasing number of projects rely on deploying software provided by the Wikimedia Foundation and related initiatives, and public infrastructures such as those run by Wikimedia emerge as important or even central repositories of cultural knowledge. We are witnessing more and more fruitful collaboration between DH researchers, GLAM institutions, and members of the Wikimedia movement. This Working Group is a bridge between these three backgrounds, and it understands its work as a contribution towards Open Science and the Commons.
More specifically, in the context of DARIAH an increasing number of community members is contributing to or using Wikidata for different purposes. In addition, Wikibase has recently emerged as a software solution chosen for a wide range of organizations and projects of different kinds and scale. This Working Group is a space for discussion and dissemination of use case experiences and best practices around Wikibase and Wikidata in a DH context, and for contributions to further developing the Wikibase software and related tools.
The group maintains a Wikibase instance and a Zotero group, and aims at being present and available for the community in different fora.
WG DHwiki is chaired by David Lindemann (UPV/EHU University of the Basque Country and Wikimedia Basque Country, chair), a Wikibase user with a background in lexicography, corpus linguistics, and bibliographical data, and Gustavo Candela (University of Alicante and Wikimedia Spain, co-chair), a DH researcher working on collections as data, Wikidata, GLAM and digital libraries. Other members of the founding group are Christos Varvantakis, a social anthropologist working as Partner Manager at Wikimedia Deutschland, and Ismael Olea (Wikimedia Spain), developer, maintainer and trainer in GLAMwiki-related services. We invite all interested colleagues to follow our work and to contribute.
