DARIAH-EU Cooperating Partnership creates opportunities for Digital Hellenic Studies

By Eliza Papaki | News | March 14, 2023

This summer, scholars from Princeton University (USA) will have the chance to connect with scholars in Greece and explore digital approaches to Hellenic culture. The Center for Digital Humanities at Princeton (CDH), a DARIAH cooperating partner, is collaborating with the MSc Program in Digital Methods for the Humanities and the UNESCO Chair for Digital Methods in the Humanities and Social Sciences at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) to host a five-day, lab-style digital humanities workshop. This collaborative project is underwritten by Princeton’s Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies, a dynamic home for various academic programs to advance the study of the Greek world from antiquity to the present.  The workshop will be hosted at the Princeton Athens Center for Research and Hellenic Studies, located in the neighborhood of Pangrati, a short distance from scientific institutions, museums and libraries.

The workshop, open to Princeton affiliates as well as students and scholars from universities or cultural heritage institutions in Greece, will help participants launch or advance their own digital research initiatives. As a leading digital humanities center in the US, the CDH is known for excellence in project design, implementation and collaboration practices. “We are excited to be working with our Greek colleagues to compare our approaches and create a unique experience for humanists exploring data-rich or computational analysis of hellenic culture,” said Natalia Ermolaev, CDH Executive Director. “The opportunity for cross-cultural learning is one of the main benefits of our DARIAH-EU cooperating partnership,” she added.

The role of digital research methods for understanding Greek arts and culture has only grown in recent years. AUEB’s MSc Program in Digital Methods for the Humanities, the first and longest-running postgraduate DH degree program in Greece, has been a leader in training a new generation of scholars. “We are thrilled for this new collaboration with Princeton University,” noted Agiatis Benardou, DARIAH-EU Director and AUEB teaching fellow. “The osmosis of academic fields and viewpoints as well as education and training in the field of the Digital Humanities are placed centrally in the strategy of the DARIAH-EU Infrastructure.”

Panos Constantopoulos, Professor Emeritus of Informatics, leader of the UNESCO Chair for Digital Methods in the Humanities and Social Sciences at AUEB and former Director of AUEB’s MSc program, noted: “We look forward to bringing together a diverse group of scholars for interdisciplinary dialogue. As data and technology become evermore present in our culture and society, conversations and connections such as these will enhance both our research endeavors as well as our ability to be responsible global citizens.”
