Recap of the DARIAH Annual Event 2019: Humanities Data

By Eliza Papaki | News | June 4, 2019

The DARIAH Annual Event 2019, held on May 15-17 in Warsaw, was a lively meeting point for researchers, Working Groups, DARIAH-related projects, and the DARIAH governing bodies to exchange experiences, present progress, explore new ideas, and discuss future challenges. More than 200 participants gathered in Warsaw to present research or exchange knowledge under the overall theme of this year’s event: Humanities Data.

“Humanities Data is a really critical topic for DARIAH to address. Internally, from the point of view of the humanities researcher, more and more of our workflows, more and more of our work, is being based on digitised data. But there is a lot of difficulties around the terminology with data. So we as Research Infrastructure can help to ease that transition. On the other hand, there is also a lot of work being done almost from the top down, in a policy level, to bring together data, to understand data as a really valuable asset for research. So we think that for DARIAH to be active here and really investigate in these questions is an important way that we can bring these two levels together.”

Jennifer Edmond, President of the Board of Directors for DARIAH-EU

The DARIAH Annual Event 2019 aimed to address and discuss various notions around Humanities Data: Is the term rich enough to capture the complexity of Humanities research? Are we talking about big or smart data? Understanding the nature of Humanities Data is a way forward for designing new infrastructures? The key challenge, as described by the Program Committee, is to keep a reflexive open discourse about the function of data for specific research questions, and the development of a culture to address the whole spectrum of ‘data needs’ of humanities scholars across all fields, all forms of collaboration and all societal relevant questions.

This year’s event introduced a new format. It combined meetings of DARIAH bodies, such as Working Groups meetings, workshops organised by Working Groups and projects, and a Marketplace to exchange ideas around new research projects and infrastructural solutions, with an open conference setting hosting papers presentations, workshops and posters from the wider research community.

Programme

The programme of this three-day event consisted of:

  • Plenary sessions
  • Two keynote lectures on the theme of Humanities Data by Prof. Sally Wyatt and Dr. Lev Manovich
  • Parallel sessions with workshops on topics of Humanities Data
  • Paper sessions and ignite talks
  • Marketplace: Poster session for Working Groups, DARIAH affiliated projects and the research community
  • Internal meetings of several DARIAH organisational bodies
