Unlocking scholarship: Introduction to DARIAH ERIC from an Open Humanities perspective

Slides presented at the DARIAH-CZ national workshop on the 21st of October (https://lindat.cz/events/workshop2021) Having a vision and a strong commitment to open research has always been important to DARIAH as it brings on collaborative and innovative means of digitally enabled research. As Open Science practices are becoming a central condition of research funding, it is even more important to establish a dedicated discourse and community practices around the open research culture as it makes sense in the arts and humanities disciplines. The presentation aims to outline discipline-specific, yet widely interoperable models of Open Science emerging from community practices of arts and humanities. It will be shown how DARIAH-EU builds an open agenda for arts and humanities research that is firmly grounded in disciplinary realities. This includes: 1)Strengthening discourse and community practices around Open Humanities 2) Providing training and advocacy to implement open research practices 3) Building infrastructural components that enable open research practices across arts and humanities disciplines. 4) Providing a strong voice for arts and humanities research communities to be heard in European and national research policy debates, with special focus on career assessment

Research Data Management WG at DARIAH – a brief introduction

Sharing knowledge, research outputs and other scholarly resources in ways that are tuned for long-term availability and maximal value, use and reuse are essential practices but also key challenges for arts and humanities researchers. The DARIAH Research Data Management Working Group aims to tackle such challenges and will support DARIAH to fulfill its mission of facilitating access to data, and supporting the work of our communities with best practices and methods in this relatively new area of academic life. The idea behind the Working Group is to leverage on the disciplinary and thematic richness of communities around DARIAH and to offer a unique space for collaboration among representatives of all major arts and humanities disciplines, cultural heritage professionals and data management experts. Involving champions from all major disciplines in the arts and humanities domain is especially important since the primary focus of the WG would be to start out from everyday research practices and firmly ground data management best practices in them. The Working Group will sustain a more intensive dialogue with the DARIAH communities about research data management, strengthen communities of practice and showcase how different disciplinary communities can take advantage of open scholarly infrastructure and tools that are available for the DARIAH communities. In addition, we are also aiming to build a knowledge hub for new professionals around data management support (data managers, data stewards, Open Science officers, subject librarians etc.) from across the DARIAH national hubs to give them the chance to exchange along the discipline-specific dimension. Currently, we are working on the following tasks: Building and maintaining a knowledge base of data management best practices in the humanities: https://www.zotero.org/groups/2427138/data_management_best_practices_in_the_humanities Providing concise, discipline-or data type-focussed case studies that are adapted to the specific methods, scale, and interests of the disciplinary communities Facilitating access to Cultural Heritage data, supporting the exchange between the GLAM sector and scholars under the aegis of the Heritage Data Reuse Charter Building a brokering hub for experts who have data management roles nationally Design a joint project to undertake with other DARIAH WGs If you are interested in joining us, please contact us at wg-rdm@dariah.eu

The more we share, the more we have: Introduction to DARIAH ERIC from an Open Humanities perspective

Slides presented at the Sharing Digitally: Seminar on Digital Tools and Infrastructures seminar organized by the University of Lviv, Center for Urban History on the 29.09.2021. It will be shown how DARIAH, a pan-European infrastructure for Arts and Humanities builds an open agenda for Arts and Humanities research that is firmly grounded in disciplinary realities. This includes: a suite of Open Science services within DARIAH (Open Science helpdesk, the OpenMethods and the DARIAH Open platforms);  training and advocacy activities and also building and strengthening communities of practice, such as the DARIAH Research data management Working Group to critically assess and shape current options for opening up research workflows and to ease compliance with national, European and global research policy mandates such as Open Access or FAIR data.

This presentation provides an overview of the SSH Open Marketplace, what it is and how it works. It focuses especially on the creation of workflows, and was used as supporting documentation for two Curation Sprint sessions given the 14th and the 21st of March 2022. "Interested in helping your fellow researchers by explaining real research workflows? Want to show off how you conduct research with tools and services listed in the SSH Open Marketplace? Want to make full use of the contextualization and interlinking features of the Marketplace by explaining step by step how you use digital humanities tools to advance the social sciences and humanities? This curation sprint is for you! WHO: Researchers interested in creating a Workflow in the SSH Open Marketplace WHAT: A two-part training session on how to use the SSH Open Marketplace, and specifically, it's research workflows WHEN: Monday, March 14th at 11am and Monday, March 21st at 11 am. The first of these hour-long sessions will be a presentation on the SSH Marketplace and how to create a workflow entry. After a week for you to explore the SSH Open Marketplace and make your own research workflow, we will then have an hour-long session to work on improving your entries and discuss any issues you may have had. WHY: Workflows are a key added value of the SSH Open Marketplace, and take full advantage of powerful semantic interlinking of Tools, Publications, Training Materials, and Datasets at the heart of the Marketplace's data model. It will show other researchers real research use cases for the various tools, taking them step by step in the process of conducting research in the digital age. It is the best way to show off your tools and research processes, by making them public for other like-minded scholars to see!"
