Performing Arts Thesaurus
During its second phase (2024–2025), the THEATRALIA working group has developed a prototype of a multilingual thesaurus for the performing arts. Covering theatre, dance, performance, and circus arts, the thesaurus is for now available only in English, with future extensions planned in French, Spanish, Croatian, Portuguese and Indonesian. It provides a coherent conceptual framework to support the description, indexing, and interoperability of archival resources, foster multilingual database research, and promote the valorization of intangible cultural heritage. This prototype marks an exploratory step toward a shared, evolving tool, open to contributions from researchers and professionals.

The project is carried out within two international research initiatives: THEATRALIA, supported by DARIAH-EU, and PERFORMA, funded by the Institut des Amériques. For implementation, OpenTheso, was used, an open-source, RDF-compatible platform hosted by HumaNum, balancing usability and interoperability.
The initial corpus was built from online glossaries (American Association of Community Theatre, Theatre Development Fund) and printed dictionaries, mainly those by Patrice Pavis, which have been translated into several languages. After extraction and normalization, about 1,400 terms were integrated into OpenTheso, including around 100 entries with fully developed, context-specific definitions for performing arts archiving and research.
