UpcomingFor the first time, the BAL-ADRIA Summer School in Digital Humanities will take place in Sweden, bringing together researchers, doctoral students, educators and professionals from across Europe to explore new approaches to research in the humanities through digital methods and technologies.
Building on seven successful editions hosted by the University of Zadar in Croatia, with the support of DARIAH Croatia (DARIAH-HR), BAL-ADRIA continues its tradition of connecting the Baltic and Adriatic regions and fostering international collaboration in digital humanities.
The Swedish edition will offer an engaging programme of lectures, hands-on workshops, research presentations and collaborative activities, with particular emphasis on emerging digital methods, interdisciplinary exchange and opportunities for early-career researchers.
The BAL-ADRIA Summer School in Digital Humanities is an international academic initiative dedicated to advancing knowledge, skills and collaboration in the application of digital methods to humanities and cultural heritage research. Established in 2019 through an initiative involving the iInstitute at Linnaeus University and the University of Zadar, BAL-ADRIA has developed into a meeting point for researchers, students and professionals interested in the opportunities and challenges of digital transformation in the humanities.
The first seven editions were successfully organised and hosted by the University of Zadar in Zadar, Croatia, with the support of DARIAH Croatia (DARIAH-HR) and an international network of collaborating institutions. The summer school has contributed to strengthening academic connections between Northern and Southern Europe, particularly between the Baltic and Adriatic regions. The seventh edition, held in June 2026, continued this tradition by bringing together international experts and participants for intensive training in digital humanities methods.
The upcoming Swedish edition marks a significant milestone in the development of BAL-ADRIA, extending its geographical reach while maintaining its commitment to accessible, collaborative and research-oriented learning. It will provide a platform for exchanging experiences, developing methodological competencies and discussing how digital approaches can contribute to new research questions and perspectives in the humanities.
The programme will address a broad range of themes relevant to contemporary digital humanities, including text and language analysis, cultural heritage and digital collections, spatial and network analysis, data visualisation, artificial intelligence and emerging computational approaches. Rather than focusing exclusively on individual technologies, the programme will emphasise research questions, practical applications and critical reflection on the opportunities and limitations of digital methods.
A central feature of BAL-ADRIA is its combination of theoretical perspectives, practical training and collaborative learning. Participants will have opportunities to engage in lectures, interactive demonstrations, hands-on tutorials and discussions led by researchers and practitioners from different disciplinary backgrounds.
