Visual Media and Interactivity

The DARIAH WG Visual Media and Interactivity was created in June 2019. After a period of activity and some changes in chairs, it was officially dormant since February 2023. It is now relaunched under the leadership of a new team, consisting of Adeline Joffres (IR* Huma-Num), who was already a member of the first WG, Xavier Granier, Professor at the Institut d’Optique (Bordeaux) and Laurent Tessier, Professor at the Institut Catholique de Paris.

Xavier Granier and Laurent Tessier are respectively in charge of the Huma-Num 3DHN and CANEVAS consortia, both are consortia in France. The 3DHN consortium is dedicated to the use of 3D in SSH (https://shs3d.hypotheses.org/). The CANEVAS consortium focuses on the use of digital audiovisual corpora (https://canevas.hypotheses.org/). 

One of the WG’s aims for this new period will be to link up these existing communities and connect them to other (existing and new) communities in Europe. More broadly, the aim of this reactivation will be to build a main contact point for DARIAH members that are interested in the use of visual media, be it as a focus of their studies or as a means to drive their research and dissemination activities further.

WG Plans 2024+

The co-chairs plan to invest time and effort in: increasing awareness on available tools (focus on video  and 3D formats and tools at first glance with annotation and curation) ; contributing to the development or customisation of visual and annotating tools to better fit DH requirements; offering training opportunities; recollecting examples of good practices or success stories. By doing so, the team aims to contribute to community building and real interaction, resulting in a better understanding for DH competence centers within Europe.

Topics:

• Visual, Audiovisual and 3D collaborative annotation (BIM, HBIM, 3DGIS, RIS3D, semantic annotations)
• 3D and Video archiving. It is necessary to ensure that Visual, Audiovisual and 3D documents can be consulted and stored. What are the most appropriate technological choices?
• 3D visualization on top of data curation
• Sharing visual, audiovisual and 3D content within a community of peers as part of a collaborative research project
• Publication and mediatization of research results in visual or audiovisual formats. In a context where the written publishing of research results remains central (papers, chapters or books), what solutions can be considered?
• Questions related to rights (image or copyright) raised by visual and audiovisual content are configured in different ways depending on the type of media and whether it is produced or not within the framework of research.
• Questions of standards and formats chosen for visual, audiovisual and 3D content themselves, their metadata and the textual or multimedia data. How can we work towards the adoption of common standards and formats?

Target groups:

• All researchers exploring visual media corpora in the various disciplines of the humanities and social sciences, and wishing to share their methods, difficulties and results.
• Students (in particular PhD students) working on research projects involving visual corpora, and wondering about the most appropriate tools for searching, preserving and sharing these particular corpora.
• University teachers wishing to train their students in methods for analyzing visual, audiovisual and 3D corpora.
• Cultural institutions, laboratories and research teams, innovative projects wishing to promote visual research collections
