2nd General VCC Meeting, Vienna
On 28 – 30 November 2012, the 2nd DARIAH-EU General VCC meeting took place at the University of Vienna, Austria. This action/results-orientated meeting was attended by 80 people from 12 countries. After the welcome from Dr. Isabella Eiselt (Austrian Federal Ministry for Science and Research) and Prof. Wolfgang U. Dressler (Austrian Academy of Sciences), DARIAH-EU Chief Integration Officer Henk Harmsen presented the demarcation lines between the DARIAH Virtual Competency Centres (VCCs) and gave an overview over the types of offer DARIAH aims to provide for the research community. Among others, these are: accessibility, interoperability and expertise.
After presentations from the VCC heads about the aims and structure of their VCCs, intensive work starts within the VCC sessions. All VCCs met separately to discuss their tasks, to exchange knowledge and organise their work. It turned out that several subjects needed to be discussed in cross-VCC sessions.
One of the outcomes of these sessions was the need to establish a Persistent Identifier expert group. Another cross-VCC task will be to develop a publication workflow process and a third cross-VCC task will deal with demonstrators.
Day 2 was dedicated to these discussions from which some of them were continued during the conference dinner in a typical Austrian restaurant, a Heuriger. The DARIAH-EU Directors Laurent Romary and Tobias Blanke collected impressions of and aspirations for DARIAH and brought them together with the DARIAH-overall strategic approach.
While some DARIAH Boards took the opportunity to have face to face meetings, some colleagues organised open sessions on Day 3 of the meeting. Marin Dacos collected ideas for centerNet Europe and Maarten Hoogerwerf facilitated a discussion about enhancing scholarly content communication.
