SUMMARY:PhD Workshop | Beyond Search: Opening Up Audiovisual Content for Hu
 manities Studies
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the “Narratives From the Long Tail: Tra
nsforming Access to Audiovisual Archives” Event Series organised by the
consortium of the Swiss National Science Foundation Sinergia Project\, a w
eek-long series of events taking place at EPFL\, Switzerland from 25th –
29th of September\, that focus on exploring the exciting intersection of
machine learning\, visual analytics\, digital museology\, and archival sci
ence. \n\n(2 ECTS provided by EPFL\, travel subsidy available)\n\nIn rece
nt years\, audiovisual content\, with its growing accessibility\, rich hid
den meanings\, and complexity in modality\, became a new frontier for rese
arch in humanities and computational domains. The quest for properly and m
eaningfully opening up the variety of information (such as historical\, so
cial\, affective\, and aesthetic) available in the ever-increasing audiovi
sual materials requires a collective effort from both sides to co-create n
ot only new methods but also new research questions.\n This 2-day workshop
\, covering both the theoretical and practical aspects of processing and u
tilising audiovisual data\, provides an entry point and a test field for r
esearchers working on digital humanities\, audiovisual content understandi
ng\, and HCI to formulate and validate new ideas.\n\nLecturers:\n Prof. Ma
rina Hassapopoulou\, New York University\n Ingrid Mason\, National Film
and Sound Archive of Australia\n Prof. Matthias Grotkopp\, Freie Universi
 tät Berlin\n Prof. Mark Williams & Dr John P. Bell\, Dartmouth College\n
Dr Luca Rossetto\, University of Zurich\n\nTo access the full programme\
