SUMMARY:European Summer University in Digital Humanities “Culture and Tec
 hnology” (ESU) 2024
DESCRIPTION:The European Summer University in Digital Humanities “Culture
and Technology” (ESU) is one of the most prestigious Digital Humanities
events in Europe. Since 2009\, it brings together a strong and vibrant in
ternational community of DH scholars and computer technology specialists.
In 2023\, the ESU found a new home at the Transylvania Digital Humanities
Centre of Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca\, where the 14th edition
will take place between 15-26.07.2024.\n\nThe ESU is directed at an inter
national audience and offers a range of parallel weeklong workshops on imp
ortant areas of Digital Humanities to students in their final years\, (pos
 t)graduates\, doctoral students\, postdocs\, teachers\, librarians and tec
hnical assistants from all over Europe and beyond\, who are or wish to be
involved in the theoretical\, experimental or practical application of com
putational methods in the various areas of the Humanities\, in libraries a
nd archives. It aims to bring together up to 60 (doctoral) students\, youn
g scholars and academics from the Arts and Humanities\, Library Sciences\,
Social Sciences\, the Arts and Engineering and Computer Sciences as equal
partners to an interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and experience in
a multilingual and multicultural context and thus create the conditions fo
r future project-based co-operations.\n\nThe Summer University is special
because it not only seeks to offer a space for the discussion and acquisit
ion of new knowledge\, skills and competences in those computer technologi
es which play a central role in Humanities Computing and which determine e
very day more and more the work done in the Humanities and Cultural Scienc
es\, as well as in publishing\, libraries\, and archives etc.\, but becaus
e it tries to integrate also linguistics with the Digital Humanities\, whi
ch pose questions about the consequences and implications of the applicati
on of computational methods and tools to cultural artefacts of all kinds.\
n\nIt is special furthermore because it consciously aims at confronting th
 e so-called Gender Divide\, i.e. the under-representation of women in the
domain of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Europe and m
any parts of the world\, by relying on the challenges that the Humanities
with their complex data and their wealth of women represent for Computer S
cience and Engineering and the further development of the latter\, on the
overcoming of the borders between the so-called hard and soft sciences and
on the integration of Humanities\, Computer Science and Engineering.\n\nT

nstructors\, the organizers\, and the venue can be found on the ESU-DH 202
