SUMMARY:Re-shaped into a virtual workshop: Disrupting Digital Monolingualis
 m
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: due to the Covid-19 health situation the event is plann
ed to be re-shaped into a virtual workshop\n\nAn international workshop on
languages in critical digital theory and practice\n\nHosted by Department
  of Digital Humanities\, King’s College London\n\nA ‘Language Acts & W
 orldmaking’ project initiative\n\n \n\nThe workshop\n\nThere has been i
ncreasing attention in the past few years to the challenges of multilingua
lism in digital practice. It has been widely accepted that digital ecosyst
ems have a ‘language and geocultural diversity’ problem – at present
they have a strong bias towards firstly English\, and then a small group
of (mostly European) languages. A series of initiatives has attempted to a
ddress this imbalance in a variety of ways\, whether driven by practice (l
anguage diversity guidelines\, multilingual toolkits\, open data repositor
ies\, and endangered languages archives) or theory (biocultural diversity\
 , digital modern languages and translingual/transcultural critiques).\n\nT
his two-day workshop brings together leading researchers\, educators\, dig
ital practitioners\, language-focused professionals\, policy makers and ot
her interested parties to address the challenges of multilingualism in dig
ital spaces and to collectively propose new models and solutions. The work
shop will combine both conceptual (strategy\, policy and theory) and pract
ical perspectives (digital ecosystems\, methods and tools with a focus on
language). It aims to strengthen connections between numerous overlapping
digital and languages-driven conversations and initiatives.\n\nThe core th
emes of the workshop are:\n\nLinguistic and geocultural diversity in digit
al knowledge infrastructures\nWorking with multilingual data\nTranscultura
l and translingual approaches to digital study\nArtificial intelligence\,
machine learning and NLP in language worlds\n\nThe workshop is aimed at th
ose interested in multilingual and cross-cultural approaches to digital pr
actice\, and is likely to be of particular interest to those working in th
e areas of: modern languages and linguistics\; multilingualism research (i
ncluding endangered or minority languages and community languages)\; digit
al cultural heritage\; digital humanities\; new media and internet researc
h\; critical digital infrastructure studies\; digital policy\; translation
studies\; AI\, machine learning and NLP.\n\nThe aims of the workshop are:
\n\nTo map the current state of multilingualism in digital theory and prac
tice through\, and across\, languages\nTo identify areas of ‘language in
difference’ in digital methodologies and infrastructure\nTo bring togeth
er experts in language-driven digital study and practice to discuss priori
ties for future action and potential collaboration\nTo discuss the value a
nd role of languages in digital theory and practice and their implications
for language study and professions\nTo explore emerging models for lingui
stic diversity and languages-aware digital practice in academia\, educatio
n and private/third sectors and to document best practice\n\nCo-convenors\
n\nThis workshop is led by the Language Acts and Worldmaking project with
the support of the Cross-Language Dynamics: Reshaping Community project\,
both funded by the AHRC under its Open World Research Initiative.
