Ethics and Legality in the Digital Arts and Humanities (ELDAH)

Overview

In the age of digital information technology and the constant availability of information through the Internet, it is not only important to have democratic access to knowledge, but also essential to consider the potential that lies in the critical production and expansion of knowledge.

Of particular interest and concern to cultural heritage institutions and Humanities scholars are issues of copyright on, provision of and access to digitized material. There is a recognizable political drive in the European Union to facilitate free and public access to cultural heritage and research data in general hosted at publicly funded institutions. However, the lack of legal harmonization and the diverse and often unclear national legislations on the use and provision of resources by public cultural heritage or research and education institutions has been prohibiting a much broader engagement.

Focus areas of interest:

  • Privacy (do we trust the researcher? Confidentiality)
  • Ethical issues (attribution and about abuse in research)
  • Scholarly conduct (reviewing, publication, …)
  • Copyright (Reproduction / Provision / Use)
  • (Open) Licensing

DARIAH-EU promotes open access of methods, data and tools. But it also stands for a responsible conduct. As an infrastructure for Arts and Humanities researchers it will not be able to solve all issues arising in the quickly progressing domain of digital research. But with its new ethics and legal strategy it will contribute generally and especially wherever it concerns researchers from communities connected to DARIAH. This will lead to better access to tools and data for researchers as well as to guidelines and orientation for the conduct of their research. Policy makers will equally profit from the outputs of the working group as they will be facilitated with background information on issues related to the working group’s topic.

    Vanessa studied German literature at the University of Vienna and worked on various digital archives projects about Austrian writers before joining the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ACDH-OeAW) in 2015. There, she is involved in a number of research projects focusing on digital editing and data modelling. She is an expert on legal aspects of digital humanities research and open science. In addition to co-chairing the DARIAH working group ELDAH, she is co-chair of Open Science Network Austria’s working group on Legal Aspects of Open Science and a member of the CLARIN Legal and Ethical Issues Committee.

    Walter Scholger studied History and Applied Cultural Sciences in Graz (Austria) and Maynooth (Ireland). Having served as Deputy Director of the Center for Information Modeling – Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities at the University of Graz (Austria) from 2008 to 2019, he now holds the position of institute manager, primarily dealing with administrative issues, project management and the coordination of the Centre’s teaching activities. He is involved in several international projects focusing on legal aspects of academia and digitization, a member (and co-lead) of several working groups of DH umbrella organizations dedicated to DH curricula development (ADHO Digital Pedagogy SIG) and issues of digital publication (DHd Working Group “Digitales Publizieren”). A veteran contributor to DARIAH-EU, he was one of the driving forces behind the “DH Course Registry” and has been active in several Working Groups, serving as Co-Lead of the “Training and Education” Working Group from 2013 to 2017 and the Working Group on “Ethics and Legality in Digital Arts and Humanities” since 2017. In January 2019, he was appointed Deputy National Coordinator for Austria and serves as the speaker of the CLARIAH-AT consortium, the national association for Austrian contributions to the CLARIN and DARIAH ERICs.
