A new free open module covering the best practices of Open Access is now available on DARIAH-Campus. The module, entitled “Gold, Green, Diamond: What You Should Know About Open Access Publishing Models” has been written by DARIAH’s Open Science Officer, Françoise Gouzi, and Toma Tasovac, Strategic Advisor to the DARIAH Board of Directors.
This tutorial navigates users and learners to the complex Open Access (OA) movement which involves diverse principles, models, and policy frameworks. The goal of this tutorial is to introduce learners to the origins and evolution of Open Access and provide insights into its objectives and global impact.
“All along the research life cycle within a research project or your own institution, practitioners and researchers have to deal with technical and legal constraints and requirements related to open access in order to enable data sharing and ensure fairness and openness of their research outputs whatever their form or format, be they traditional publications, datasets, or workflows”, says Françoise Gouzi. “As technologies are constantly changing and policies on Open Science are evolving quickly at the European level, it’s crucial for researchers to acquire or maintain skills in different areas.”
The rapid and exhaustive takeover of much scientific content by commercial publishers has sometimes led to confusion over the meaning of terms such as Gold Open Access, Diamond Open Access and therefore, over the nature of publishing services provided by the different platforms. This tutorial highlights the importance of knowing the basic principles and history of Open Access, and of understanding and being able to properly use the terminology appropriately, depending on the research context.
“Starting from there, researchers can really practice and promote the FAIR principles in their day-to-day research, making data more Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. Understanding and updating regularly your skills in the Open Access environment will provide appropriate conditions to advance and “think” research as a public good,” Françoise Gouzi concludes.
