Call for Participation: DARIAH-EU Workshop “Thesaurus Building – Introducing Themas, a Tool for Multilingual Thesaurus Building”

By dariah | News | February 7, 2017

The topic of the DARIAH-EU workshop will be “Building Multilingual Thesauri”. It will focus on the presentation of the Greek web tool Themas.

Themas (Thesaurus Management System) was developed within the framework of DARIAH-Gr project. The workshop is intended for the humanistic scientific community and for GLAM institutions (archives, libraries, museums) to which thesauri are necessary not only for the organization of knowledge and information in general but are also an important factor in ensuring the sustainability of e-infrastructures.

Detailed description
The web application Themas was developed by the Centre for Cultural Informatics/ Information Systems Lab/ Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) to support the creation and management of multilingual thesauri. The workshop is organized by the Academy of Athens within the framework of DARIAH-EU project “Humanities at Scale”, and financed under the Horizon 2020 Programme.

This workshop will be divided into three sections:
1.    a theoretical section,
2.    a section demonstrating the online tool Themas, and
3.    a section focused on hands-on experience.

Section 1. This section will include a presentation of theoretical and methodological issues concerning the creation and management of multilingual thesauri, by Maria Daskalaki (FORTH). Issues concerning the digital representation of knowledge in the Humanities will be discussed along with the presentation of the theoretical foundation used for the compilation of thesauri for the humanities within the framework of Themas.

Section 2. This section will include a demonstration of the web tool Themas by Lida Charami (FORTH), and a presentation of two thesauri that had been compiled within the framework of DARIAH-Gr project by G. Chrysovitsianos and P. Kalafata  (Academy of Athens) in the fields of archaeology and narratology respectively.

Section 3. During this section the participants will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience by working on the Themas online tool in order to create their own thesauri in the field of their interest.
