The MPG is seeking an exceptionally qualified and experienced Head of the Max Planck Digital Library.

The Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL; http://mpdl.mpg.de), established in 2007, is a scientific service unit within the Max Planck Society. The MPDL is designing and developing software infrastructure and applications in the domain of scientific information and is responsible for providing the scientists of the Max Planck Institutes with all relevant electronic information resources such as journals or reference databases. MPDL also supports MPG in its Open Access activities.

As head of the MPDL, you will be responsible for all system-wide information services and the strategic positioning of the MPG in the arena of eResearch, scientific information management and scholarly communication. It is essential that all concepts and developments under your management will be based on maximum responsiveness to the requirements of our researchers and institutes including their individual libraries and IT groups. The MPDL is already involved in many high-level initiatives both on the national and international level. It will be part of your role to further elaborate this strategy and to ensure best effectiveness both for MPDL and MPG. You will report directly to the Executive Board of the Max Planck Society; and the operations of MPDL will be overseen by a Steering Committee made up predominantly by Scientific Members of our Society.

Our preferred candidate is strongly service-oriented, creative and a visionary leader at the same time. You have solid experience as researcher and as manager. You have a proven track record in building and sustaining service excellence in at least two of the following areas: digital libraries, eResearch, software development, digital publishing. Experience in international collaboration and a substantial professional network are a further prerequisite. The multi-site character of the MPG and the high degree of autonomy of the institutes will require excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build a strong relationship and trust with the institutes of the MPG.

The MPDL is located in Munich. The salary will be equivalent to leading scientific management positions. We offer an initial two-year contract with subsequent tenure consideration. For applications please contact: Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Vice President Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schön, Postfach 10 10 62, 80084 München, Germany (email: HR@gv.mpg.de). The MPG will begin reviewing applications by June 15, 2010.

The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply. The Max Planck Society is committed to employing more handicapped individuals and especially encourages them to apply.
